Chyulu hills
The Chyulu Hills is a mountain range in eastern Kenya, situated 190 km south-east of Nairobi and 30 km south-west of Kibwezi. The hills consists of several hundred small flows and cones and craters.
Breathtaking volcanic scenery. The eastern flank of the hills including about half of the forest area. The park boundary runs down the centre of the hills along the line of the peaks.
The hills hold no permanent surface water but rainfall percolating through the porous rock feeds many permanent fresh water sources in the surrounding plains, notably Mzima springs and the Tsavo and Galana rivers.
The ecology in the lower parts of the hills consists of grasslands and thickets, there are various bird species on the hills, with some endemic species.
Chyulu Hills has spectacular cave systems and sports the worlds longest lava tube, The Leviathan. The porous nature of lava rocks has helped keep the surrounding areas abundant with fresh water thus providing the perfect sanctuary for the regions ample wildlife.
The steenbok, (Raphicerus campestris), is a common small antelope of southern and eastern Africa.
There is currently no accommodation in the park, but campsites Chyulu II, park headquarters, Kiboko campsite.
